Connecting Africa’s tourism economy — digitally, efficiently, and at scale.

Our approach

01 / The opportunity

The opportunity
in Mozambique

Tourism is one of the largest formal employers in Sub-Saharan Africa, yet the structure of the industry systematically excludes the small operators who deliver the experience from capturing revenue. In Mozambique, a country with extraordinary coastal, marine, biodiversity, and cultural assets, digitization of tourism MSMEs is nascent, and most rural operators remain invisible to global demand.

The result is that revenue accrues disproportionately to a small number of operators, international online travel agencies (OTAs) that charge commission of up to 25%, and intermediaries based outside the country. The operator on the ground, typically a small family business, often women-led, often located in or adjacent to a conservation area, captures a fraction of what their service generates.

02 / People & communities

Local businesses.
Lasting impact.

This directly translates into household poverty outcomes. A tourism MSME owner in rural Mozambique typically supports up to 6 dependents and employs up to 6 additional workers, each of whom supports their own household. When the MSME is invisible to international demand, those households remain trapped in the lowest tier of tourism income: walk-in business, domestic day-trippers, or one-off referrals, while higher-value, multi-day, internationally-sourced bookings flow elsewhere.

The problem is exacerbated for two marginalised groups:

  • Women-owned tourism enterprises, which face compounding barriers of lower digital literacy, less access to capital, and structural exclusion from male-dominated trade networks.
  • Community-based operators adjacent to protected areas, whose tourism revenue is the principal financial incentive for community-led conservation.

Failing to capture demand further deteriorates poverty and conservation outcomes.

03 / A wider purpose

Beyond market access

Solving the market-access problem for these MSMEs requires intervention beyond the bounds of the tourism sector because it represents a direct lever on rural household income, women’s economic inclusion and enhanced economic viability and sustainability of community-led projects, including in conservation and regeneration of degraded biodiverse ecosystems.
